How to choose a suitable pos system?

This question really can be a headache for people who are going to open own business and looking for a suitable pos system for it. There are so many types of pos systems for various tasks, with different configurations, software and operating systems that unexperienced businessmen can be easily confused. I understand that if you wanna open your own store, cafe or restaurant choosing the best pos system possible is extremely important for saccess of your business  I passed the way from the beginner to real POS guru and one day I decided that it would be a great idea to share my knowledges with everybody who need some help.

So what type of pos system would be optimal for your business? Why same systems from different companies  have different prices? Do you need the huge classic pos system or an iPad-based one will do?
